Derick Dillard recently spouted off on Twitter with another series of homophobic rants. That’s nothing new for the 30-year-old law student, though. Dillard got his family booted from Counting On after bullying transgender teen, Jazz Jennings, via Twitter. While Dillard’s tweets are genuinely troubling, he isn’t the only member of the Duggar family to share homophobic world views. In fact, it is rumored that Michelle Duggar once had a member of the production staff removed from the show simply because he was gay.
Did Michelle Duggar have a production member
booted for being gay?
While crew members are to abide by non-disclosure agreements on all sets, that doesn’t mean tidbits of information don’t leak out every now and again. The Duggar family has suffered a couple of scandals in recent years, but none have been outed by crew members. In 2015, however, an alleged former member of the production staff came forward to suggest Michelle had a crew member booted from the team for being gay, according to In Touch.
As the story goes, Michelle decided to chat up the staff one day ahead of a trip to New York City. Back in the early days of the show, the family had rarely left Arkansas and had little knowledge of the outside world. She allegedly asked the crew members if the gay population was causing trouble in New York.
One crew member accidentally outed another
member of the team, mentioning that the crew member was a part of the
population Michelle was asking questions about. Michelle allegedly confronted a
producer about the situation, and the crew member was immediately swapped onto
a different set, according to the source.
The staff was told to remain a hands-off
approach to the Duggar family
The incident allegedly went down early on in the family’s series run. While the cast of 19 Kids and Counting has become more “worldly” as the series continued, crew members were asked to avoid having direct contact with the family.
According to Pop Culture, crew members were instructed not to taint the family’s world views. In fact, they were encouraged to avoid talking about anything with the Duggar family, lest the conversation veers onto any topic the family might find objectionable.
The topics that could be deemed objectionable for Michelle Duggar could be as innocuous as music and popular culture. The crew was also asked to avoid reacting to anything that the family said that might seem incorrect or ignorant. The goal was to preserve their world view, at all costs.
Michelle has a history of homophobic views
While the production company behind 19 Kids and Counting have never confirmed the rumors, many fans believe Michelle’s alleged behavior seems pretty typical for the mother of 19. After all, the Duggar family has public supported anti-LGBTQ legislation and has voiced homophobic ideas in recent years.
Michelle Duggar lent her voice to a series of robocalls that denounced laws aimed at offering transgender individuals equal rights. In the call, she compared transgender people to pedophiles, according to The Washington Blade. She later went on to defend herself in an exclusive interview with Megyn Kelly.
The family also explicitly asks potential suitors about their relationship with the gay community. One question on a lengthy dating questionnaire asks would-be beaus if they’ve ever been “exposed to homosexuality.” It goes on to ask the suitor to explain the situation in-depth.
